DXCC NEWS FLASH. If you are not
a OPDX InterNet Subscriber or read the ARRL Bulletins than you
missed that a "New DXCC Entity Was Added". Palestine
will be added to the DXCC List effective October 1, 1999.
Contacts made with Palestine (callsign E4) stations after
February 1, 1999, will count for this new entity. Under the DXCC
rules, contacts with the deleted entity of Palestine made prior
to June 30, 1968 do not count for this entity. There is no
commonality of territory or administration.
3A, MONACO. Last week we
mentioned that Leo, K8PYD, will be active from February 18th to
March 2nd, possibly as 3A/K8PYD. Leo now tells OPDX that Tom,
N9NC, who previously operated as 3A/N9NC during the CQWW CW
Contest, will be joining him in Monaco February 19th for a week.
Tom will only be free during their evening hours after work. He
plans to work 40, 80 and 160 meters CW. Leo also mentions that
either or both of them may join in the contest the weekend of
February 20-21st.
3B8, MAURITIUS ISLAND. There is
plenty of activity from here. Hans, 3B8/DJ7MI, has been very
active on 160/80/40/30/15 meters. His activity will continue
until February 20th. QSL via DJ7MI. Jacky, 3B8CF, seems to like
30 meters a lot lately, check around 10103 kHz between 0230 and
0330z. The "South-West DX Bulletin" states that 3B8GD
has been very active on the weekends on 28495 kHz and 18145 kHz.
QSL via 3B8DB.

7O, E4 AND P5, YEMEN, PALESTINE AND NORTH
KOREA (HA5PP Projects in the works......). Zoli, HA5PP,
writes to OPDX that he has been in Yemen twice in 1998, and is
still trying to get permission to operate. He continues to work
with Yemen's General Director of Ministry of Communications
(MoC), Abdulgader Ibrahim, on a plan and an application to
reactivate amateur radio in Yemen. Zoli feels the process is
slow, but is close to having 7O back on the air. He tells OPDX
that he just needs a little help to convince the "MoC".
Zoli has requested that the OPDX readers and the DX associations
call or FAX Mr. Ibrahim, and ask "What is the
status/progress of amateur radio in Yemen." Tell him the
world's amateur radio operators are anxiously waiting the return
of amateur radio in Yemen. Also, state that you support Zoli's
efforts to help re-establish amateur radio in Yemen. Zoli states
that he can set up a nice amateur radio station with the
coordination of some USA/Europe/Japan organizations. Here are
General Director Abdulgader Ibrahim's phone numbers:
In Zoli's letter, he also mentions that he is
also thinking about going to E4 (Palestine) soon. This is
currently in the planning stages and more details will be coming
out later. Sponsors and donations will be welcome. Zoli's letter
to OPDX he states, "It seems to me, the hams have given up
that the P5 will be on the air "again". I know that
this is crazy trying, but I will try P5....." Zoli states
that plans are in the works to visit North Korea. He also has
mentioned that he is looking for sponsors to help fund a short
operation (which may last only a few days). He feels the time is
right. "GO FOR IT!", are his words he tells OPDX. If
you are interested in helping Zoli, he can be contacted by E-mail
at: navus@mail.matav.hu
8P, BARBADOS. Jim/K4MA and
Will/AA4NC will be active as 8P9JA and 8P9JB respectively from
February 17-22th. They will operate the ARRL DX CW Contest using
the callsign 8P9JA as a Multi/Single entry. QSL to home
callsigns.
BT1WW CQ 160 WRAP-UP. The
following is an excerpt from a press release by Tim Totten, N4GN,
written by Martti Laine, OH2BH:"..... The People's Republic
of China indeed appeared on 160 meters in this past weekend's
contest. The U.S. pileups were huge but unfortunately so was the
noise level in Beijing. While congratulating those 24 U.S.
stations who made it through, the gang in China also wants to
apologize for those who kept calling." The lucky stateside
stations are: N7RT, N6RO, W6UB, W7TVF, N6FF, W6YA, K6VX, W2VJN,
K6SE, W6UE, N6ED, W6AJJ, N2KK, WU6T, KF6T, N7UA, K6UR, KG6I,
W6PBI, W7IUV, KC7V, W7XR, N7DD and AB6LF. The greatest signals
were N6RO, N6FF and W6AJJ. You can QSL to: Martti J. Laine, Unit
No. 21H North Lodge, China World Trade Center, No. 1 Jianguomen
Wai Avenue, Beijing 100004, People's Republic of China. Your
observations are also welcome to the following two e-mail
addresses: martti.laine@nmp.nokia.com
and crsa@public.bta.net.cn
CE, CHILE. "The 59(9)
DXReport" states that Jack, WA0RJY, will be traveling in
Chile during February and hopes to be active for about 5 days. He
will probably be active as either CE/WA0RJY or CE/K7ED. QSL via
WA0RJY.
DXERS LOSE A RARE ONE. He was
not a rare country, a rare IOTA or even a special event station,
but a King of a country. DXers who have been around for a few
years (or a few decades) knew that working the King, JY1, was a
rarity, honor and an accomplishment. For me (as your editor)
working the King, was one of my favor highlights as being an
amateur radio operator. It is not everyday that a leader or King
of a country that would take the time to talk to you on amateur
radio, but King Hussein of Jordan gave us that chance. Even
though it was rare, the King has been heard on HF, and he even
made a contact with the Space Shuttle via VHF. King Hussein's,
JY1, signal on the ham bands will be dearly missed. The 63 year
old monarch, peace-maker, who was treated in a U.S. clinic for a
relapse of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, was pronunced clinically dead,
but was kept on life support after the collapse of all his major
organs, except his heart. He became a "Silent Key" (SK)
as this bulletin was being prepared. OPDX would like to send our
deepest sympathy to King Hussein's wife, Queen Noor, and the
family.
E4, PALESTINE. Reports indicate
that Ali, JY4NE, has mentioned that he will be active from
Palestine. He states, that the Ministry of Tele- communications
in Palestine has not issued ham radio licenses yet, so he is
still waiting. He think his callsign will be E44A, but he is not
sure. Ali says to keep on checking his Web page for up-to-date
info at: www.angelfire.com/ny/JY4NE/index.html Other
sources state Ali will be active possibly February 20-21st or
February 27-28th from Gaza, QTH of ZC6B. Activity will be used on
the highest open band. Operations will be SSB and some CW.
Possible callsign may be E44E.
FO, FRENCH POLYNESIA. Look for
Helmut, DJ4VW, to be active until February 20th, as FO/DJ4VW. His
activity will be mainly on 20 meters SSB. He will be on the
Island of Raiatea (OC-067). QSL via DJ4VW, direct or the bureau.
JD, MINAMI TORISHIMA. The
"DX News Sheet" reports that Ryochi, JL1KFR, is active
again until February 15th, as JL1KFR/JD1. Activity will be CW and
RTTY, especially to Europe and North America. QSL via home call.
QSL INFO AND NEWS.....
OY1CT QSLS. OPDX has received information that several
sources are stating OY1CT QSLs can be obtained via F6GNG;
this is wrong. OY1CT has stated that "he has ALWAYS
handled his own QSLs direct". So, please QSL direct
ONLY to OY1CT.
QSL Manager Kevin, VK2CE, (manager of VK9NX) has a new
address. Please check your data bases. The address should
be: Kevin Mulcahy, POB 300, Merrimbula, 2548, Australia.
BQ9P QSLS. It is being reported that these cards should
be coming out sometime in February. QSLs will be a full
color folding card.
XX9X/XX9TAR/XX9TMC/XX9TNC/XX9TOT/XX9TXD QSL CARDS. Steve,
KU9C, reports QSL cards for the various XX9 operations in
October, 1998, listed are beginning to hit the mail. He
states that he is about 1/2 way through the pile, and
hopes to have most, if not all, out early next week.
However, he does mention that if you sent your card with
others, such as B1A, BT2HC, BQ9P or many of the other
stations that he manages, this will slow their return to
you. He expects to be mailing these cards out during the
month of February as well.
PA6, NETHERLANDS. Bill, PA3BIZ,
PR Manager of the VRZA (Dutch Radio Society), wants to remind
everyone that the PACC Contest (160-10 meters) will be held next
weekend February 13-14th (1200-1200z). Also, look for their club
station, PI4KGL, which has received the special callsign PA6V for
the contest. All QSLs go through PI4KGL and Dutch bureau.
PY0S, ST. PETER & ST. PAUL ROCKS.
Paul, PT2NP, ABRA Director-Secretary, informs OPDX that the
ABRA-DX Brazilian Association will be going on another DXpedition
to St. Peter and St. Paul's Archipelago (formerly known as St.
Peter and St. Paul's Rocks - PY0S). This operation will start
March 15th or 16th and last until March 21st or 22nd. The ABRA
team will include the following operators: PT2HF/Lunkes,
PT2GTI/Stuckert and PT2NP/Paul. Operations will be on SSB and CW,
but other modes are in the planning stages. The group will leave
the port of Natal on March 10th, and will be back on the
Brazilian coast between March 26th and 29th. QSL via PT2GTI. Paul
also informs OPDX that this operation has no connection with the
other group announced by Karl, PS7KM. More information is
forthcoming. Paul, PY3PAZ, provides OPDX with the following PY0S
information: "These Rocks are a Federal Silvester Resource
and there are about 4 Brazilian scientists living there for no
more than 15 days at a time because of the bad conditions. On the
Rocks, you have sun all day long, calm winds and the temperature
reachs about +45C sometimes. Imagine how hard it is...The nights
are sometimes warm but sometimes cold. The crew is changed every
15 days and the entire support comes from the Brazilian Navy.....
It is quiet hard for a civilian group to go there. On the Rock,
there is no place to be, no grass, no energy (only by batteries)
and no potable water as well...... Only rocks everywhere."
You can also visit the ABRA Web site at: http://www.pt2dx.org.br
This site is written only in Portuguese, but at least you can
enjoy the many photos from the four DXpeditions made by the
Association to the following islands: Trindade, Coroa Vermelha,
Martim Vaz and South Shetland-Antarctica.
S7, SEYCHELLES. "South-West
DX Bulletin" reports that Kurt, HB9MX, will be active until
February 27th, as S79MX from Mahe (AF-024). Activity will be on
40-10 meters. QSL via HB9MX: Kurt Bindschedler, Strahleggweg 28,
8400 Winterthur, Switzerland.
SPECIAL EVENT STATION. The
Boland Amateur Radio Club will be running a special event station
between February 27th and March 1st, to celebrate the 150th
birthday of the L'Agulhas Lighthouse. The special callsign
ZS150LL (L'Agulhas Lighthouse) will be used on all the popular HF
bands and all contacts will be confirmed with a very special QSL
card. The L'Agulhas Lighthouse, built in 1848/49, is the second
oldest lighthouse in Africa and the Southern most lighthouse in
Africa. Boland ARC invites all lighthouse and radio enthusiast to
pay a visit to their special station which will be active from a
caravan parked right next to the light house.
T8, BELAU. Look for JA5AUC and
JA5IU to be active as T88TM and T88SY, respectively, from Palau
February 11-14th. They will be there on a mini vaction but
activity will be on 160-6 meters CW/SSB. QSL via home callsigns
and it is "OK" via the bureau.
V3, BELIZE. Joe, K8JP, and his
wife Beverly will be driving to Belize, leaving about February
6th. They expect to arrive there about February 11th and return
on March 9th. If all goes well with the tower and antenna
installations, Joe will be operating the ARRL DX CW and SSB
Contests as a Single Operator High Power All Bands and the CQWW
160 SSB Contest as a Single Operator High Power. Outside of the
contests, Joe will be operating mostly on the lower bands,
160/80/40 meters CW with some SSB. Joe will use the callsign
V31JP. He also mentions that he has a great deal of non-ham work
to accomplish on this trip, so daylight hours will be spent on
dealing with those tasks. He will be testing antennas on the
higher bands. Also, on most mornings around 1200z, Joe can be
found on 14165 with W2MIG and friends. QSL via Joe's new manager,
Lonnie W. Miller, KA9WON, 12031 Blue Spruce Dr, Roscoe, IL 61073,
USA.
V7, MARSHALL ISLAND. Tom, N4XP,
states that he will be here for 10 days beginning February 27th.

will be priority with 30 meters for Europe as well. QSL to home
callsign N4XP.
VK9C & VK9X COCOS-KEELING AND
CHRISTMAS ISLANDS. Just a quick reminder to look for
W0YG, W8UVZ and WB9Z to become active from Christmas Island as
VK9XX, now until February 13th and from Cocos-Keeling, February
13-20th, as VK9YY. Their activity will be mainly on 160/80 meters
CW, the WARC bands both CW and SSB, and RTTY on 15/20 meters. QSL
via W0YG. Also, Charlie, W0YG, states, "Please do not
include VK9XX and VK9YY cards in the same envelope."
VP2E, ANGUILLA. Mike/W1USN,
Bob/AA1M and Jim/W1HL will be enjoying a week in VP2E-land.
Operations on CW and SSB are anticipated. Callsigns have not been

Dallas, K1DW, informs OPDX that he is headed to Tortola, BVI, for
three weeks starting on February 16th. His intention is to
operate the ARRL DX CW and SSB Contests and the CQWW SSB Contest.
During the non-contest times, Dallas plans to operate 160-10
meters on SSB, CW and RTTY. Dallas states, "I know that VP2V
is not a rare country, but many may be looking to fill in
countries for 5/6 band DXCC and RTTY DXCC."
