OK1RD, PY7ZY, RW3RQ, VK3AKK, YO2LDE & South-West DX Bulletin
and ZS5BBO for the following DX information.
3A, MONACO. Leo, K8PYD, reports
to us that he will be on the air from February 18th to March 2nd,
possibly as 3A/K8PYD. Operations are to be mainly RTTY with some
CW.
3B8, MAURITIUS. The "DX
News Letter" reports to look for Hans, DJ7MI, to be active
this week from February 2-20th as 3B8/DJ7MI. He will be on the
air especially on CW on the lowbands. QSL via bureau to DJ7MI.
3W, VIETNAM. The "DX News
Sheet" reports Nikolay/UA0FM (3W5FM) is now active on 160
meters (1825kHz) at his sunrise (2316z) for Europe. QSL via his
home callsign.
5A, LIBYA. Abubaker, 5A1A,
continues to be active on 10 meter CW mostly weekends around
28040 kHz between 1545 and 1630z. Also, check for SSB activity on
28445 around the same times. For low band activity, check between
2100 and 0000z on 160/80 meters. He says QSL by "Registered
Mail" ONLY to Box 74421, Tripoli, Libya.
5H, TANZANIA. Ralph, 5H3RK, is
another very active station from here. Some may remember Ralph
who was previously active as Z21HS a couple of years ago or so.
He is a very active CW op who likes low bands when possible. Over
the last week, he has been heard on 20 and 40 meters between 2000
and 0400z. He will be attached to the Swedish Embassy for the
next couple of years. Between Ralph and Dave, 5H3US, they should
provide a lot of DXers with Tanzanian QSOs. He has met Dave,
5H3US, and perhaps they will get together for a serious CQWW 160
effort. So far, from temporary quarters, he just has a multi-band
vertical on the air. But he has a yagi and will probably put it
up soon now that he's in permanent quarters. QSL via Ralph
Karhammar, 5H3RK, PO Box 9274, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
5H, TANZANIA. The "DX News
Sheet" reports Maurizio, IK2GZU, will be active February
8-28th, while working at a mission. No callsign was mentioned. He
will be active on the HF bands using a tri-band beam and dipoles.
QSL via home callsign direct or bureau (E-mail request can be
sent to ik2gzu@spidernet
for bureau cards).
9G, GHANA. The "DX News
Letter" reports that Seth/9G1OO, Arie/PA3ERA, and
Bert/PA3FUE intend to activate the club station 9G1AA in
Dormaa-Ahenkro during February (no specific dates given). Look
for them to be active mostly on CW on 20/15/40 meters. DO NOT QSL
via PA2FAS. The correct QSL route is via PA3ERA, Arie
Barendrecht, Taankade 10, NL-3311 TN Dordrecht, The Netherlands
(also for 9G1OO and PI4DEC).
BT1WW, CHINA. During this past
weekend, the Chinese Radio Sports Association (CRSA) aired a
special event experimental station BT1WW for 48 hours to
participate in the CQWW 160-meter Contest from Beijing. What was
unique is that the antenna is some 300 feet above the ground, but
the sad news is that the location is rather noisy and mounting a
receiving antenna was impossible. The operators of this event are
BA1AB, BA1OK, OH2BH and others.
CT3, MADEIRA ISLANDS. Alain,
F5LMJ, will be active as CT3/F5LMJ from February 13-20th. He will
be active on CW on 10, 14 and 18 MHz (10110, 14030 and 18080
kHz). However, his activity will be limited because he is on
vacation.
HK0, SAN ANDRES. Carl, WB4ZNH,
reports that he and his wife (Martha, WN4FVU) are going on a
contest DXpedition with a group from the Woodbridge Wireless from
Northern, VA, as HK0/W4DC. He states they will be there for two
weeks in San Andres, "alternately relaxing, building the
station, killing ourselves during the contest and then packing it
all back up again." Their operation will take place during
the ARRL DX Phone Contest the first full weekend of March. He
also mentions that they are attempting to get a special
distinctive Columbian callsign for the duration of the contest
and that it might not be possible, so if not, they will be
signing HK0/W4DC. For more information, check their Web page at: http://www.pwcweb.com/wwi/DXpedition/
IOTA NEWS......
IOTA 99. The annual convention of the IOTA will take
place in Alicante, Spain, April 24-25th. All the details
of this great event can be found on the URE's WEB site
at: http://www.ure.es
NEW ONES. Joe/I2YDX and Roberto/IK2WXZ will be signing
E30LA and E30MA respectively by the time you read this,
but their first activity will be from Dahlak Archipelago
(AF-038) and may be over (QTH February 1st). However,
they plan to activate two non-number Eritrean IOTAs, one
from February 2-3th and the other February 6-7th. The
dates of the two unnumbered ones will depend on the
weather and any local problems. QSLs will go via their
home callsigns.
NA-074. KL7AK will be active from Nunivak Island, Alaska,
located in the Bering Sea about 150 miles West of Bethel,
Alaska. This is a RARE ONE for IOTA. KL7AK will be active
June 4-7th. There will be two stations on SSB/RTTY/CW.
Check the usual IOTA frequencies, but mainly 14260 kHz.
QSL to KL7AK via the callbook address or Bureau.
SA-008. The crew of the Ushuaia Radio Club activate LU8XW
during the CQWW 160 Meters Contest this past weekend.
Their location was on Tierra del Fuego Island.
SA-046. Ciro, PY7ZY, reports that between February
6-17th, he will put Itamaraca Island on the air as
PY7ZY/7 on CW/SSB. QSL to: Cicero Xavier da Silva -
PY7ZY, P.O. Box 501, 58001-970 - Joto Pessoa - PB -
Brazil. This visit is in preparation for the IOTA Contest
in July when the callsign ZX7XX will be activated.
Operators will be PY7XC/Jim, PY7ZY /Ciro, PY7ZZ/Fred,
PR7PO/Alex and PR7FB/Jack.
EU-011. TOM/G0PSE and STEVE/G4EDG will be active July
22-29th, on CW/SSB 160-10 meters on St. Mary's Island
(Isles of Scilly) using the callsign GB0SM. They will
also be participating in the IOTA Contest (July 24-25th)
with the callsign G5M. QSL via Bureau or Direct via
G3WNI: Bill Lindsay-Smith, Way Close, Madford, Hemyock,
Cullompton, Devon EX15 3QY
ITU NEWS. From Saturday's
(Janaury 23rd) New York Times: "In a step towards virtual
statehood, Palestinians are about to be granted a form of
long-distance independence, their own country code for
international telephone calls..... Over Isralei objections, the
International Tele- communications Union quietly announced this
month that the area code 970 had been reserved for the Palestine
National Authority territory in the West Bank and Gaza. The
union, a United Nations affiliate based in Geneva, agreed in
principle to give the Palestinians a code at its membership
meeting in November...... The International Telecommunications
Union governs the global allocation and regulation of area codes,
broadcast frequencies, Internet bandwidths and satellite signals.
It voted to give Palestine its own country code, as well as its
own radio call signs and broadcast frequency assignments."
J3, GRENADA. "The 59(9)
DXReport" states that Bill, K4LTA, plans to be active as
J3/K4LTA from March 10th-April 10th. QSL via homecall.
KH6, HAWAII. Look for Richard,
K5NA, to be active this month as KH6X, February 16-27th. Activity
includes an entry in the ARRL DX CW Contest.
PIRATE ALERTS......
Rob, HJ3PXA, reports that a station signing OA4CRK is
operating from Bogota un-licensed. This station has
operated several of the last contests and has recently
given out QSOs leading everybody to believe he is
operating from PERU. He never says portable /HK3.
Elmo, EA5BYP, QSL Manager of 3C1GS, reports a station
using the callsign 3C1GS has been active on CW. He states
this is a pirate because 3C1GS only operates SSB.
More on VK4XN. Ken, VK3AKK, suggests that the reports of
a VK4XN may not be a pirate but a case of "poor
hearing". As a DXer, Ken states that he has been
watching the 80m DX window since it was opened to VK. He
has spoken to other VKs and they have never heard a VK4XN
there. But, there is a VK2XN, Wayne, and he is very
active there as well as 40m and other bands. Wayne is
located in northern VK2 and is usually on the air with a
group of VK4s. So, this may be the reason, perhaps, a
check of the bogus QSLs against Waynes log may reveal the
answer.
POSSIBLE NEW ONE? Foreign
Minister Ali Alatas announced Wednesday, that Indonesia will
propose to the People's Consultative Assembly, the nation's
highest constitutional body, that East Timor be allowed to become
independent. Alatas said the Indonesian government will put the
proposal to the assembly by the end of this year. The assembly
would then vote on whether to allow East Timor to become an
independent country.

Lovric, Am Oelberg 11, 61231 Bad Nauheim, Germany/EU.
Mario mentions many USA and JA stations are sending ONLY
1 USD for return postage. He states that this is not
enough because it cost him 3 DM ( that is about 1.8 USD).

Europe, must send 2 USD or 1 IRC. Mario will answer ONLY
if enough return postage is enclosed! All other QSLs

SPECIAL EVENT. Another
country/station (please refer to OPDX.393) has announced that
they will be active with a special callsign to honor the work
done by the coast radio stations around the world for almost 100
years. Communication on CW will stop on February 1st at most of
the world's coast radio stations as the new GMDSS system will
take over communications with ships. Look for JW0LGS to be active
February 1-28th. Operations will take place form Svalbard
Radio/LGS - the world's northernmost coast radio station. JW0LGS
will be operating CW only 1830, 3510, 7010, 10110, 14010, 18070,

QSL via JW5NM, Box 498, 9170 Longyearbyen, Svalbard Island,
Norway.
SPECIAL EVENT/PREFIX. From
February 1-7th, look for operators RK3RWR and RW3RQ, from the
"Michurinsk Contest Groupe", to activate the special
callsigns UE3RCG and UE3ROM, respectively. Activity will be on
all bands CW/SSB and the WARC bands. You can receive a
"MCG-MEDAL" trophy for QSOs with these 2 stations
during this period. This trophy is free, but please send QSLs and
LOG data to: Andy B. Yatskiv, RW3RQ, P.O. Box 30, Michurinsk
393740, Russia. For more details, send E-mail to: valer~su@html.ru
