IMPORTANT NOTICE AND REMINDER!
Remember when QSLing, the U.S. Postal Service will increase their
rate effective January 1, 1999, from 32 to 33 cents. Some
operations who are active now may not send their cards out until
the first of the new year. Please do not short change U.S. QSL
Managers by putting a 32 cent stamp on the return envelope.
4S7, SRI LANKA. Kamal, 4S7AB, a
25 year old electronics engineering undergraduate living in
Colombo, is completeing his final year and during his leisure he
likes to chase DX. He states that he is active on the HF bands

December and return to the USA. QSL via N4JR.
A3, TONGA (Help needed!). Paul,
A35RK, is looking for some help. He needs someone to hand-carry a
new rig and antenna parts to Tonga, and also carry broken radios
back to the States for repair. If anyone is contemplating a trip
to Tonga soon, and is willing to help, please contact Paul's QSL
Manager (Bob Preston, W7TSQ) at: w7tsq@aol.com
In exchange for this assistance, Paul will provide free room and
board at his family's guesthouse for one week and the use of his
radio station on Lifuka Island (IOTA OC-169).
A5, BHUTAN. Last week we forgot
to mention in Jim Smith's (VK9NS) announcement that HIDXA has
returned all the A5 donations due to his postponed trip, that was
mainly due to the bad weather and storm damage on Norfolk Island.
AH2, GUAM. The members of Guam
Contest Club will once again be active from here during the
upcoming CQWW CW Contest. The club built an Oceanic record in the
Multi-Single category in last year's CQ World Wide DX Contest
(CW) and plans to participate in the same category to increase
their score. Operators Toshi/JR7OMD/WI3O, Hiro/JH0USD and
Sassy/JR0BQD will use the callsign AH2R during the contest. Guam
Island (KH2) is on Zone 27 and has an IOTA of OC-026. They report
that the Sunrise/Sunset is: 2026/0751z. QSL via JI3ERV (Do NOT
send to KH2 Bureau).

CORRECTION TO OPDX.380. Herik,

informed OPDX this past weekend that he has just returned from E3
land and states that he would like to go back as soon as possible
(with a better rig). Zoli reports he made a total of 13,000 QSOs

other than a minimal amount of testing. QSL to his home call,
direct or via RSGB bureau: Don Field, G3XTT, 105 Shiplake Bottom,

to be active on 160 and 80 meters in the CQWW CW Contest. Due to
antenna limitations, only HS7AS, HS0AC and E22AAA are expected to
be active on those bands. QSL HS7AS and HS0AC direct and E22AAA
via HS1CHB.

handle the task. For those who have not received your
cards yet, Jim states, "Please be patient and do not
resend at this time. I have logs in hand and expect to
have the backlog in the mail by mid-November. Just a
reminder - if you have submitted cards to Mike 'via
bureau', he probably never received them. There is no
Incoming Bureau for KH0 and ARRL policy (per their web
site) is that they 'no longer hold cards for countries
with no Incoming Bureau'." Jim also mentions that
Mike has capability for all modes and hopes to be
particularly active on RTTY as family life and work

SPECIAL EVENT. Glyn, GW0ANA,
along with fellow members of the Barry Amateur Radio Society will
be recreating the first ever "Marine Distress Signal"
ever sent by radio on December 19th. The group will be on board
the East Goodwin Lightship in the middle of the English Channel
12 miles off the Kent coast from Dover. They will re-create the
first ever "Distress Call" sent out 100 years ago by
the Lightship East Goodwin in 1898 after she was rammed in fog by
the SS Mathews.. Using a Marconi Spark gap transmitter that
Marconi had only just sold to Trinity House, the first ever
ship's radio operator sent out "CQD" because of this
radio distress signal. The ship's company was saved from drowning
on the Goodwin Sands. The callsign they will use at this historic
recreation is GB100EGL, where the suffix stands for the East
Goodwin Lightship. This callsign will only be active on December
19th. However, the Society will also be active at the South
Foreland Lighthouse for a longer time. This is the other end of
the link from East Goodwin Lightship. The callsign from the South
Foreland Lighthouse is GB100SFL and it will be active from
December 18th to the 27th. QSLs for GB100SFL and GB100EGL go to
GW0ANA. These cards will be very special because they will
represent the first time human life was saved by radio, and
proved beyond a shadow of doubt that commercial radio was
possible.
SPECIAL EVENT. In celebration of
the 75th anniversary of the first transatlantic radio connection
by W1MO and F8AB, the French Telecommunication Authority has
agreed to let certain French operators use the callsign F8AB for
the night of November 25th to November 26th. The historical event
took place on the night of November 26, 1923, around 0200z,
between F.H. Schnell, W1MO, Hartford, Conn. USA and L. Deloy,
F8AB, in Nice, France. In order to celebrate this anniversary,
F8AB will be active from the Nice area starting 2000z on November
25th and will be operating until 0800z on the November 26th, on
the following frequencies:
SSB - 18140, 14240, 7070 and 3770 kHz
CW - 1835, 3525, 7015 and 14035 kHz
Special attention will be paid to North America, but ALL
callsigns will be answered! The F8AB callsign will also be used
by the Bordeaux DX group for the CQWW CW Contest. A special QSL
will be printed by the Clipperton DX Club. QSL Manager is F2VX.
QSL via Bureau or direct.

WELL KNOWN DXER HEADS TO HONDURAS.
Peter, ON6TT/5X1T was informed Friday, November 13th by his HQ
that he will be leaving for Rome, Sunday morning to prepare a UN
telecoms team leaving later next week for Honduras. Peter states
that he will be in Honduras and neigbouring countries for a

damage, so food is needed badly. Our UN organization is the one
bringing in the food, transporting and distributing it. But
without decent telecoms, it will be difficult. And there is not
much telecom left."
XX9, MACAU (ZONE 24). Another
SCSDXT member will be providing another multiplier in the
upcoming CQWW CW Contest. Look for Pertti, OH2PM, to activate the
famous XX9X station on all bands as a single operator during the
contest. Look for warm-up activity from XX9 starting the weekend
of November 21-22nd, as OH2BH helps Pertti line up the beams,
tweak the amplifiers and prepare for the CQWW race. QSL this XX9X
operation via Pertti Simovaara, OH2PM, callbook address.

involves several Olympic medalists, and is all in an effort to
raise donations to assist Cambodia's victims of landmine
accidents. The marathon and the DXpedition itself will be
featured on Japanese television. In the noble spirit of promoting
international friendship and goodwill through amateur radio, hams
worldwide are invited to participate in this international
humanitarian effort with their donations, large and small. Any
such contributions received in support of this effort will be
forwarded immediately to Cambodia for this purpose. Contributions
maybe forwarded via JH1AJT. In the meanwhile, if DXers would wish
to forward suggestions in regards to propagation (openings,
