TROUBLE IN VANUATU. Alan,
VK4AAR, reports to OPDX that a YJ station that he has been
looking for several weeks (because he is manager) finally came on
the air only for a few moments on January 12th (OPDX has decided
not to mention the station's callsign, due to possible
repercussions). With an unusually weak signal on 20m, the station
said that there is big trouble in Vanuatu at the moment, and he
has lowered his antennas (hence the poor signal) as a precaution.
The situation is that there is a civil uprising. Alan asked him
to stay a minute or two, and he refused saying "I must go
QRT immediately!" He sounded quite disturbed, but said he
was OK and had survived the big cyclone of recent days. Alan
states he has a number of QSLs to reply for this station, but
needs to check with him and his logs for the reports. Anyone who
is currently still waiting for a reply at this time...please be
patient and Alan will get them turned around as soon as possible.
XT, BURKINA FASO. "The
59(9) DXReport" states Mike, F5RLE, will be active on all
bands, mostly CW January 22-March 9 as XT2DM.
XW30/XW30A FROM LAOS NOW QRT.
This DXpedition received good news during the week in that the
authorities in Vientiane had authorized a two day extension to
the operation. The DXpedition went QRT on the 16th at midnight
Laos time instead of the 14th. This gave many an extra chance to
work the XW30/XW30A stations. If you did not work them, you will
have another chance later in the year. The Laotians have invited
the group back to operate in October. We are sure more details
will be forthcoming.
ZX0, ABRA ANTARCTIC DXPEDITION.
Paul, PT2NP (ABRA Director Secretary), informs OPDX that the
ABRA-DX Brazilian Association will activate its fourth
DXpedition, this time to the Antarctic region. From January 22nd
to February 8th, operators Lunkes, PT2HF, and Paul, PT2NP, will
be active from the Brazilian "Comandante Ferraz"
Antarctic Base Station, located on King George Island (counts for
DXCC South Shetland Is., IOTA AN-010, DIB-20). Their callsigns
will be ZX0DX (SSB) and ZX0CW (CW). They may also use the
"Comandante Ferraz" Antarctic Station's callsign
ZX0ECF. Besides operating on SSB and CW, they intend to work on
RTTY, as ZX0CW. Suggested frequencies:
WARC - Operations will depend on taking the proper
antennas. There is a chance of operations on 160m and 6m,
if they can take antennas and equipment for that.
The QSL manager will only be PT2GTI (OK in the Callbook). The
cards can be sent to him directly or via bureau. There may be
operations from other islands near Antarctic Peninsula.
