Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio
Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster
Network, N1HRW, W1EKT, WB2RAJ/WB2YQH & The 59(9) DXReport,
W2CE, K4MD, K4ZW, KI4RU, N6RT, K8JP, K8YSE, DL3KUD, F6AJA &
LNDX, HB9HFN, JA6VZB, LA4KQ, OH2BVE, OK1KT, VA3DX, VK4AAR and
VE9AA for the following DX information.
SPECIAL EDITOR'S NOTE: My family (wife/OPDX's
chief proof-reader Linda, Tedd [TJ], Katie) and I (KB8NW) would
like to wish all DXers, Contesters and OPDX readers a very
"Happy Holiday and Season's Greetings". Also, we would
like thank the many who have contributed information over the
year (there are too many to list). Without them there would not
be an OPDX Bulletin.
8P, BARBADOS. Glenn, VA3DX,
reports to OPDX that he will be active again as 8P9DX, from
January 18th to February 1st. His time and activity will included
the CQ 160 Meter CW Contest (January 23-25th). He will be active
on all bands. QSLs should be sent to VA3DX or VE3ICR and not to
the 8P QSL bureau!!
CU1, AZORES. Matt, DL3KUD, will
be going here again between December 29th and January 7th. He
will be active from Santa Maria Island (IOTA EU-003) as
CU1/DL3KUD. His planned operations will be on the Low-Bands
(especially 160m) and the WARC bands. Activity will be on CW and
probably some RTTY (his first steps in RTTY, please be patient!).
His suggested frequencies (+/-QRM): 1834, 3504 (QSX 3527), 7004,
10104, 18074, 24894 kHz. QSLs will be answered via bureau. If
possible, do not send any QSLs direct.
DXPEDITION PACIFIC 98' is what
the main sponsors (ALCATEL CZECH and the Czech DX Foundation
[OKDXF]) are calling this operation. Members of the OFDXF will be
heading for the multi-stop trip to the Pacific with the following
itinerary: Departure is from Praha
Feb 18 - to Frankfurt and the same day land in Los
Angeles
Feb 20 - from LA to Papetee/ Tahiti
Feb 24 - from Papetee to Rarotonga and the same day
flight to Aitutaki atol
March 4 - from Rarotonga to Tonga via Nadi (the same day)
March 14 - from Tonga to W. Samoa
March 23 - from W. Samoa to Fiji
April 1 - from Fiji to Hawaii and then to Europe
If possible, the group might divide during the stop on Western
Samoa and try spend few days on American Samoa. Operators will
also have a license for Rotuma Island, but due to transport
problem, nothing is sure. The operators will be OK1TN, OK1KT and
OK1VD. They will be equipped with PAs as well as beams for the
WARC bands and 20-10 meter and a vertical for the 40 meters band.
If possible, at least two stations will be on the air. Callsigns
will be announced later, and a all mode operation is expected on
the usual DX frequencies. QSL information is via: OKDX
Foundation, P.O.BOX 73 Bradlec, 293 06 Mlada Boleslav, Czech
Republic. ADDED NOTE: During the process of planning there
appeared a possibility to activate Midway Island for a week or
ten days. Unfortunately, it could not be possible without
additional charges (not very high - it is only a hop from
Hawaii), so any donations would be very appreciated.
HB0, LIECHTENSTEIN. Kazik,
DL2SBY, will be active from here December 27th through January
3rd. He will be active on both CW and SSB. Check the DX Nets on
14226 or 14247 kHz. For CW, look for him at the bottom of the
band edge. QSL via homecall.
HP, PANAMA. Gerard, F2JD/HP1XBI,
is headed back to France after more than 21000 QSOs. He will be
back in Panama in the middle of January for two more months.
IOTA NEWS. Herve, F5RMY, and
some other operators will be using the callsign TM5CRO from
Porquerolles Islands (IOTA EU070) from January 14-20th. They will
be active on CW and SSB from 160-10 meters. QSL via F5RMY.
IOTA SURVEY BE CONDUCTED. Chris,
N1HRW, reports, "The Islands on the Web Website is
conducting a web-based 'Top Needed IOTA Islands' Survey. This
survey will be used to generate a list of the most needed IOTA
islands in the world and the percent of IOTA chasers needing
them. IOTA Chasers can take part in the survey by filling out a
form on the IOTW website at: http://islandchaser.com (go to the
"Survey" section of the site). The IOTA need list form
can be E-mailed to "n1hrw@islandchaser.com",
or send the list to Chris Taron N1HRW, 607 Harwood Ct.,
Champaign, IL 61820. The survey has been ongoing and runs until
0000z January 10, 1998. Survey results will be displayed on the
site on Jan 10.

QSL INFO AND NEWS..........
Fernando, EA4BB/D2BB, reports to OPDX that the QSL route
for D2BB is now Joe, W3HNK. He states he will be sending
him all the logs and will keep on doing so in the future.
SPEAKING OF JOE! Joe, W3HNK, recently gave Doug, N6RT, a
list of all the stations he handles QSLs for. Hope this
will be useful for everybody:

N4BQW/KH5 PALAMARA QSLS. Mac, WA4FFW, reports that the
cards received to date for the recent operations are in
the process of being verified, and it is expected that
all cards will be mailed by the middle of January and
should be in everyone's hands certainly by the end of
January. It is apparent that Chuck had some help in the
form of a pirate. Mac reports that he has observed cards
for days Chuck was not on Palmyra Island. Chuck did not
operate from Kingman Reef, so contacts with N4BQW/KH5K
are definitely no good. Mac asked for everyone to be
patient as this is the Season and everyone is very, very
busy. (TNX Mark McIntyre)
QSLs for JW5VK, JW1BJA and JW4KQ, which were active
during December 12-15th to Svalbard, Spitsbergen Island
(IOTA EU-26), the Longyear Town, should go to the
following QSL Managers: JW5VK and JW1BJA via LA5VK; JW4KQ
via LA4KQ.
QSLs for the recent JY8ZW operation go via K4ZW (ex
KE9A): Ken Claerbout, 10 Clover Hill Dr., Stafford, VA
22554
Z21AV CORRECT ROUTE AND ADDRESS REPORTED. The correct
address for this station is: Ron Peacock, POB 631,
Kwekwe, Zimbabwe, Africa
CY9AA QSL CARD STATUS. Mike, VE9AA, reports in a brief
note that all the artwork, pictures, etc. have finally
been done up and couriered to their QSL-card sponsor,
WJ2O, a couple of weeks ago. Mike states, "Dave is
likely very busy during the holiday season, so please be
patient waiting for your CY9AA VHF & HF cards. Once I
get them back from Dave, I intend to work on them every
weekend I am home. I am presently attending college AWAY
from home, so I won't be able to get them out probably as
quickly as I would like, but they'll get out eventually.
(FEAR NOT!)"
VK0ANARE (Revised route again!). Alan, VK4AAR, informs
OPDX that Tom Stokes, VK0ANARE, has now returned to
Australia from Macquarie Island, and regrettably, he has
made a sudden decision to handle his own QSL cards for
that operation. Alan states, "I have no control over
his decision (which I suspect are a bit rash). I hope the
DX community will be able to keep up with his changes. I
will send him all the requests that have already come to
my address, there is no need to re-QSL! Effective
IMMEDIATELY the address for VK0ANARE is: Tom Stokes, c/o
VK1AUS, POB 2063, Kambah Village, ACT 2902,
Australia." Alan is still the manager for VI0ANARE.
They are totally separate operations. VI0ANARE was from
1st July 97 until 23rd October 97. VK0ANARE was from 25th
October to 31st October 97. The direct address for
VI0ANARE is: Alan Roocroft, c/o Post Office, Dalveen, QLD
4374, Australia (Bureau cards go ONLY to VK4ARB....not
VK4AAR!).
SOUTH PACIFIC DXPEDITION.
Cedric, HB9HFN, informs OPDX that he and HB9DLZ will be active
from Tonga and Western Samoa. Details are as follows: From
Tongatapu, they will be there from February 5-10th and sign A35LZ
(HB9DLZ) and A35FN (HB9HFN). From Western Samoa, they will be
there from February 10-23th and sign 5W0LZ (HB9DLZ) and 5W0FN
(HB9HFN). They will be especially active for Europe and mostly on
CW (80-10 meters). QSL via home call (via bureau preferred). For
more details see: http://www.qsl.net/hb9hfn/
T88, BELAU (SSTV activity).
Tosy, JA6VZB, is planning to be active as a Mobile SSTV station
during the SSTV contest (January 2-3rd) as T88JA. The contest
exchange is: send your original picture and serial number. QSL
via bureau to JA6BSM. (PLEASE send it via bureau. Every QSL will
be submitted to bureau.)
TG, GUATEMALA. Toni/OH1TD,
Heikki/OH3JF, Hessu/OH6XY and Raija/OH7LIX will be on the air
from January 18th to February 5th (1998). They will arrive in
Guatemala on January 16th, and their flights back are on February
6th. They will possibly be assigned with the TG0OH callsign (to
be confirmed later). They will always operate split and suggested
operating frequencies are as follows:
For lowband operators, the following sunset and sunrise times
apply during their DXpedition to TG-land: sunrise between
0033-0030z and sunset times 1149-1158z. Their equipment includes:
IC-730, IC-735, IC-751 and TS-690. Linear amplifiers are Heathkit
SB-1000 and Tokio HI-Power HL-700B. Antennas will be 2 phased
HF2V's - like in XF3/OH3JF expedition where their 80m signal in
Europe was very strong with this antenna set-up. In addition they
have a Cuscraft X7, A3WS and R7000. For top band they have two
antennas and for some other purpose G5RV. They will operate from
SanBenito which is at the lake, Lago Peten Iza. This QTH is on
the northern part of Guatemala, and there is a clear view over
the lake towards Europe, as the stations will be located by the
lake. QSL via the bureau or direct to calbook addresses: RTTY via
OH6XY and CW/SSB via OH3JF.
V2, ANTIGUA. Operators Bob/AA1M,
Jim/W1HL, Tim/KA1MID and Mike/W1USN have plans to vacation and
operate from Antigua from February 23rd to March 2nd (1998). They
currently have not been issued callsigns. QSLs can be sent direct
to each Op or via bureau.
V31, BELIZE. Joe, K8JP, and his
XYL Beverly are currently on the road driving to Belize and
expect to arrive around December 23rd. If all goes well, he
states he will start operating as V31JP on Christmas Day,
December 25th, and run through January 12, 1998. He plans on
participating in the "Stew Perry Top Band Challenge"
(December 27-28th). Outside of the contest, he will be on mainly
160, 80 and 40 meters. Look for him on 1827.7, listening up 2
kHz. When the band is open to Europe or Asia, he states that he
will give them priority. The same applies to 80 and 40 meters,
3507.7, 3527.7, 7007.7 and 7027.7 kHz, listening 2 kHz up when
the band is open to Europe and Asia. He will operate some 75
meters SSB in the DX window. Joe will be checking/moving to 160
on the half hours. He suggests that when working him on 40 or 80
meters tell him that you would like to work him on 160 meters
before he goes to 160 meters. Please QSL via his new address: Joe
Pontek, Sr., 26441 Devaney Rd., Arcadia, IN 46030, USA.
V4, ST. KITTS. Halvard, LA7XK,
will be active in the first of the new year (January 4-17th) as
V47XK. Look for activity during his mornings and evenings. QSL
via homecall.
